Bow Front Crochet Baby Sandals

Aren't these super cute? I was looking online for a baby sandal pattern but I could not find one that I liked enough. So I made my own! I have never written a complete pattern before but these turned out perfect (and cute too)! Below is the free pattern* and tutorial in size 0-3 months. Length of finished shoe is 3.25". Will fit a foot up to 3". Please leave a comment if you made these or see any errors!

Making these for a boy? Then just follow the pattern here and instead of doing the bow at the end, head over to Playin' Loopy with my Hooky for a modification (thanks Angie)!

Check out these other crochet patterns:

Worsted Weight yarn- I used I Love This Cotton
Size F hook
2 buttons

*EDIT: to make these a little bigger, use stitch count in parenthesis. I have not made them in the larger size personally but the numbers should work. Please let me know if they do not work.

Shoe Sole (two for each shoe)

1st Sole- worked in the round
(Chain 9)

(Rnd 1) Work 2 sc into 2nd chain from Hk. Sc 4 (5). Hdc 2. Work 8 Hdc into last chain. Working across other side of chain, Hdc 2. Sc 4 (5). Work 2 Sc into last chain. (24, 26)

(Rnd 2) Work 2 sc into the first sc from previous round. Work 2 sc into the next stitch. Sc 7 (8). Work 2 sc into each of the next 6 stitches. Sc 7 (8). Work 2 into the next two stitches. (34, 36)

(Rnd 3) Sc 2. Work 2 sc into the next. Sc 10 (11). Work 2 sc into the next two stitches. Sc 4. Work 2 sc into the next 2 stitches. Sc 10 (11). Work 2 sc into the next stitch. Sc 2. Tie Off (40, 42)

2nd Sole- worked in the round

Same 3 rounds as instructed above but do not tie off.
Place wrong sides of both soles together.
Ss both soles together all the way around (40, 42)
Weave in tails

Look for chain highlighted in the circle. Will be on the side of the sole right under the ss.

Shoe Back

Right Shoe:
In dip of sole, attach yarn by pulling up a loop of your second color (pictured below).

(Rnd 1) Chain 1. Hdc in next 16 (18) stitches ending up even on the other side (pictured below). Turn.

(Rnd 2) Hdc into NEXT stitch and all stitches across. Turn. (15, 17)

(Rnd 6) Hdc across 12 (14) Tie off and weave in tail.

Left Shoe:
Starting on the same side of the sole as before, repeat rounds 1-4 as above turning after Rnd 4.

(Rnd 5) Hdc across (12,14) total stitches. Chain 13 (15).

(Rnd 6) Sc into bottom of 5th chain from hook (working under the chain this time). Sc 8 (10). Ss to shoe back. Tie off and weave in tail. (9,10)

Bow

Chain 4
Ss into first chain to form a ring.
*ch 5, Dble Treble 3 X's in ring, ch 5, ss in ring*...repeat once more (Edited 4/17/14 thanks Janet!)

Cut long tail and tie off.
Wrap yarn around middle 6 times. Using beginning tail, tie off and weave in tails.

Attaching bow

Thread tapestry needle and leaving two stitches in between shoe back and the bow, whip stitch bow to sole in the 5 chains. When moving to other side of bow, simply slide needle in between the sandwiched sole to move to other side and whip stitch again. Tie off and weave in. Using tapestry needle again sew buttons to shoe back.

  1. These are so adorable! Definitely pinning in case I get ambitious. I've done some crochet but this looks more complicated... and they might already be too small for my baby girl - she is almost 7 weeks and growing so fast!! btw, your babies are beautiful!

P.S. I found your lovely blog when you posted this pattern on Babycenter. I don't really post there but I read the Feb. 2013 message boards all the time!

  2. Thanks Amanda! I Love Babycenter! These are a little big on my 9 week olds, isn't it funny how all babies are different?

  9. What beautiful babies, and the sandals are adorable for those little feet. Thank you so much for posting your pattern I am the talk of my friends of course with you,as the pattern originator.
I love these and so do my friends who have recently had babies,(I made for baby showers).
I have a question, larger size, should there also be a chain 10 in parenthesis for larger size. When doing the 5 sc and the 2 hdc there is no last chain for 8 hdc.

    1. There will look like each sole has an arch to one side but in reality they are evenly arched on both sides, so when you ss together it will end up matching perfect.

  18. Hi! I really love your design, you are very talented! These are super cute. I made a pair for my daughter. I really appreciate you sharing your pattern :) I do hate to alarm you, but felt it necessary to inform you that there is a person on Instagram that has made your sandals in the same color and is selling them without crediting your design. As a person who also writes patterns, this is very offensive to me. She has also made one of my designs and is selling her work without crediting the design. I'm not sure if this is something that bothers you or not, but did just want to inform you of this. Please feel free to email me if you like Amanda.b.vanhoose@gmail.com

  23. I know that pattern designers like to say that you cannot sell anything made from their patterns and that they are for personal use only but it's not true. In one of my crafting groups someone posted this link and it explains how it all works with patterns and such. I really think you should take a few minutes to read through the information. http://yarnobsession.com/yes-you-can-sell-crochet-pieces-made-from-someones-pattern

Plus, in your own comments on June 20, 2013 at 10:46am you state "I'm going to edit my blog to state that you can not sell, not that that will deter anyone :/" Which means that anyone who made sandals between March 27th and June 20th were making things under the assumption that you didn't mind because you posted a FREE pattern on your blog and didn't edit your original blog post to say you didn't want them to sell anything from it until June 20th.

However, as you can see by the link that I posted, you can't actually tell people they can't make and sell anything from the pattern you posted. You can choose to remove the pattern but anyone who already has the pattern is legally allowed to make and sell products from it. And lets be honest here, this pattern has been around for ages. You can find many versions of it on Ravelry, Craftsy and throughout blog postings all over the internet. While the techniques to reach the final product might vary slightly, the actual finished product is pretty much the same as many other patterns out there.

I have never made or attempted sandals but I do have eyes and quick hands. I have this type of sandal (and many others) bookmarked in my browser and saved on my computer and I quickly verified that this pattern/style is definitely out there already. You have the right to be petty and remove the pattern out of spite, that is your choice. If you do that, you might as well remove ALL your patterns and never post another free pattern again because if you post something, someone will eventually make it and sell it even if it is years down the road.

My point is this, you can be the type of crafter that is proud of what you accomplished and leave it available for others to create and possibly make their own cute variations. You can be the kind of crafter who revels in the fact that others like your stuff so much that they want to reproduce it. Or you can be the petty and spiteful crafter who removes all her patterns and people never look at the same way again. Believe it or not, your comments here and your actions against others IS being talked about within the crochet community and they are not taking your side. So I would think very carefully about how to decide to proceed before you end up completely alienating such a close community.

  24. I realize that and I have told people that I understand that if they made them before I changed the rules than it is okay. I understand people can do what they want with a free pattern even though the creator has said that its for personal use (which I do believe it said that BEFORE I changed it) which means exactly how it sounds, just for your PERSONAL use. It also says to give me credit. I asked her nicely if this was the pattern she used and reminded her that I did not intend anyone to sell it. She wouldn't remove because she legally doesn't have to, can't argue with that! I am contemplating letting people sell it as I can not control this. And I know I love a free pattern too! My problem is not with readers. My problem is with specific companies in China using MY pictures and pattern to sell these wholesale on places like DHgate.com. Look I'm sorry if I offended anyone! I'm new to this whole posting thing and wasn't sure how to word things! I'm so flattered to all of you who have made these and loved them! If you had a problem with me you could send me a message rather

  25. I love these sandals - they are so cute! I'm working on making a pair, but I'm stumped by the bow. When you say: "Chain 5 (6).
YO 3 (4) times. Insert hook into center ring and pull through 2 loops, 4 (6) times to form a long stitch."
Could you clarify? Am I pulling them through the center loop? does the center loop stay on the hook? Do they go over the center loop? I would love to make a pair for my baby girl!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ok lets see, you chain 5 then insert hook into center of ring then pull up one loop, then you are going to YO again and pull it through two loops, YO then through another two, then another two, then another two. Does this make sense?

  33. It is hun. I was thinking of sewing some velcro on instead of a button so I could put the mock "buckle" on the strap too.
I'll write up the modified bit tomorrow and add it to my blog :o)

  34. I am confused on one part. Cute pattern by the way. Rnd 6, hdc across 12. Where does this start and end? On the strap?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Christina, Once you do Rnd 5 you will keep going. I guess I should change the wording because you actually don't turn and start a new round. So if you keep going, after the sc 8 you will hdc 12 and end on the other side of the show from the strap.

  38. I've tried for over an hour to make the bows and just cannot get them to work. I can't even get the second long stitch to work out. Would you mind giving a little more instruction? I'm not an experienced crocheter, but can usually work at intermediate levels. I'm sure it's something very simple and I'm just over complicating it.

  40. It's a very nice pattern!! I saw it by Valerie. Do you agree i translate it in dutch and make a link to your blog? Many dutch people also would love this pattern. Creative greetings from Anna from Holland.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Laura, I think I found the problem with the pattern. I changed it to say that you only repeat the step above for the second long stitch. You don't have to create the ring or chain 5 again between long stitches. Does that answer your question?

Bookworm, I can try to make a video, I think it would be hard to show you in pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love this pattern. Decided to start on it today while waiting for my husband to have triple bypass tomorrow and first grandchild, a little girl, due in a couple of days, so maybe I'm not thinking clearly, but I don't understand this part:
Only for 1st sole- Make a large loop then pull it through to other side. Tie off.
Do I leave the loop on the back side and what is the real purpose of it since I will be crocheting the 2 soles together. Sorry for my confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  43. A video would be great! I weaseled my way through the soles and the back, but now I'm stuck on the bow. How do you pull through two after yo and sticking it in the center? Doesn't it just come back out the center before you can pull through two loops. Sorry, like I said I am really bad at reading patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Socksaholic- congrats on the upcoming grandbaby! The reason for the loop is it moves the working yarn to the other side and makes a prettier tie off. So you pull a large loop, remove your hook, turn the sole over, reinsert hook in the NEXT spot and pull that loop through. Tighten and tie off. You can totally skip this step if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bookworm- yes it comes back out of the center. So you yo3 then insert hook into center grab the yarn and pull back out. Then you can start pulling through two loops at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I adore this pattern, thank you! They worked up fairly quickly while watching t.v. I used sugar n'cream cotton yarn for the softness and it gave them just the right amount of stiffness. I can't wait to try them on my 2 month old granddaughter!!

  52. I, like one of your other commenters am confused by the term YO. I do not understand what you mean by YO. Your response to another commenter was, "Ok lets see, you chain 5 then insert hook into center of ring then pull up one loop, then you are going to YO again and pull it through two loops, YO then through another two, then another two, then another two. Does this make sense? " The answer would be NO, it doesn't make sense to me. You did not explain what a YO is. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm sorry I thought she wanted me to explain how to make that stitch. YO means "yarn over" meaning wrap the yarn around the hook to start before you insert. You can look up You Tube videos for "yarn over" and they will show you how to do it.

  69. Love this pattern and so far it's been very easy to understand. But I'm stuck at the last part...I chained 15, turned and sc in the 5th chain from the hook. I'm not grasping what to do with the rest of the line.

(Rnd 5) Chain 13 (15). Turn. Sc into 5th chain from hook (working on top of chain like a regular turn). Sc 8 (10). (9, 10)

(Rnd 6) Hdc across 12 (14) Tie off and weave in tail.

Even though my website needs a ton of work (hence generating traffic isn't anywhere in my agenda), I write guest post just to get my name out there in front of potential clients.

  88. Making these right now for my 6 month old. I used a size 5mm hook and a slightly larger worsted weight yarn to make the size needed and so far they are a perfect fit. Thank you for the pattern.

  89. ADORABLE!! Made the small size twice!
For the larger size should we start with a chain 10?

  100. I made a version of these cute sandals for my 11 month old twins. They have long feet, so I used the 6-12 month sole from a Two Girls pattern I purchased, and I made the front part differently because I couldn't get the bow to come out right, and it was too tight on their feet. I ended up skipping two stitches from the back like you suggest and pulling a loop through the next stitch used to ss the soles together, chaining 16, pulling a loop through the ss on the opposite side, ch 1, then ss back through the chain 16 to the other side and pulling a loop through the next ss to attach. I repeated that to make 4 rows, tied the rows together, and added a daisy to embellish. If I can figure out how to post a picture on here, I will...

She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone! height shoes
